Manufacturing is an ever-growing and vital industry. Almost everything we use today has had some part that’s been manufactured. The manufacturing field is made up of a variety of jobs, including tool and die makers, machinists, welders, and sheet metal workers. Those with positions in this field play a huge part in the items people use every day.
Tool and Die Makers
Tool and die makers set up and operate equipment to produce metal parts, instruments, and tools. More specifically, they use CAD software (computer-aided design) to develop blueprints and sketches for specific products and parts. They must be trained to use both CAD and CNC (computer numerical control) machines. This position is done in factories and industrial facilities and involves using drills, lathes, grinders, and milling machines.
Machinists
Machinists use a variety of tools and techniques to produce precision metal parts, including steel bolts, titanium screws, and automobile pistons. They are able to read detailed blueprints and sketches, work with CAD and CAM designs, and set up and operate CNC machines. They also work with milling machines, drills, lathes, and grinders to create these parts. Machinists are in high demand to make parts for a variety of industries.
Welders
Welders use heavy machinery and high heat to melt metal into different shapes, connect pieces of metal together, cut metal, and repair damaged components. They must also be able to read blueprints and technical drawings, set up welding equipment, and test and inspect welded surfaces and structures for any flaws. They work on metal pieces for vehicles, ships, tools, piping, farm machinery, and even space vehicles.
Assemblers and Fabricators
Assemblers and fabricators build vehicles, toys, electronic devices, and more. To excel at this job, individuals need to be able to read and understand blueprints and schematics, use certain tools and machines to assemble parts and final products, and conduct quality control checks as they build parts and products to ensure any problems can be fixed if necessary. They must also have a wide range of knowledge so they can determine how to put items together correctly.
