Electricity runs most of the world. Because of that, when the power goes out, it can affect just about everything. From computers to appliances to HVAC systems, when there are electrical problems, daily tasks are much more difficult. That’s why electrical experts are so crucial and why it’s a great field to look for career opportunities.
Electricians
Electricians install, maintain, and repair wiring and electrical components like transformers and circuit breakers, identify electrical problems, and address any problems that occur in the electrical system in both homes and commercial businesses. They must also be able to read blueprints and other technical diagrams to do their job properly and clearly communicate any issues to the client or contractor. As electricity can be dangerous, the job also requires knowing state and local building regulations as well as the National Electrical Code. With how much the world relies on electricity to function, there can never be enough electricians.
HVAC Technicians
A Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) technician installs and repairs various heating, ventilation, and cooling systems year-round. They work on furnaces, thermostats, and air-conditioning systems to ensure they are running smoothly in residential and commercial settings. HVAC electricians focus primarily on the electrical components of these systems and must have both HVAC and electrical expertise to properly diagnose and repair any issues that come up.
Contractors
Electrical contractors are responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in both residential homes and commercial buildings. As a contractor, they hire and supervise electrical subcontractors. They also work closely with architects and engineers to ensure all electrical needs are being met and that everything is up to certain codes and standards.
Subcontractors
Electrical subcontractors take on independent contracts to install and perform maintenance on different electrical components. They typically work for contractors and are brought on for specific jobs or to perform a specific task they have expertise in. General responsibilities may include cable design, electrical installation and repair, and regular maintenance of certain components.
