HVAC Technicians
HVAC technicians primarily install, repair, and maintain heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems that control the temperature and air quality in residential homes and commercial buildings. HVAC technicians must know the state and local regulations regarding installing and maintaining these units and how to properly handle and dispose of materials. Other tasks include cleaning out ducts, inspecting systems, replacing filters, and checking refrigerant or cooling levels. Beyond that, being able to communicate effectively with clients and others on a construction site is crucial.
Boilermakers
The title speaks for itself. Boilermakers install, maintain, and repair boilers that provide heat and electric power, but they also work with closed vats as well as other containers that hold liquids and gas. This position primarily works in commercial buildings and manufacturing facilities. They often inspect boiler systems, clean out vats, repair broken pipes, joints, and valves, and often have some welding and metalworking experience.
Sheet Metal Workers
Sheet metal workers are responsible for making and installing a variety of products made of thin metal sheets. These products include ducts used in heating and air conditioning systems. Sheet metal workers must be able to pick the right type of metal based on the building or design plans, install the sheeting, and make changes and repairs on-site. Some of these workers specialize in a single aspect of this work, but typically, they still know all aspects of the job.
