Construction

Construction is one of the most vital and popular industries today. The need for new construction, renovations, remodels, and repairs in residential, commercial, and industrial fields are never satisfied, which makes it a great place to look for career opportunities.

CARPENTERS

Carpenters construct, repair, and install structures made mostly of wood. This can include installing doors, floors, furniture, cabinets, or anything made out of wood. Whether you’re working on a new build, a remodel, or refitting old structures, as a carpenter, your specific skill set and experience are vital to almost all residential and commercial construction projects.

PAINTERS

Painters are important to most construction jobs. Not many other roles on a construction site have their work as visible as painters do. Whether you’re painting walls, staining furniture, or painting a whole house, your skills and experience are necessary to ensure a job well done on both residential and commercial jobs.

PIPEFITTERS

Pipefitters are some of the most unsung heroes on a construction site. As a highly skilled and certified tradesperson, pipefitters install and repair chemical, acid, and gas piping systems in homes and high-tech businesses. They work with high-pressure systems, stainless steel pipes, and complex alloys. They also install hot water and steam heating systems, refrigeration, air conditioning, and pneumatic piping. But pipefitters aren’t just seen on construction sites; they can be found in power plants, hospitals, pharmaceutical facilities, and many other industrial industries.

ELECTRICIANS

As electricity is a part of just about every building, whether it be a residential home or a factory, electricians are important to just about any construction project. Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical power, communications, lighting and light fixtures, and control systems. Electricians also ensure everything is up to code. To ensure the safety of everyone on the job as well as everyone who will be using the space, qualified and experienced electricians are always needed.

HVAC TECHNICIANS

HVAC technicians are responsible for heating, air conditioning, refrigerators, and ventilation on a construction site. They install, clean, and maintain HVAC systems, install the electrical systems and wiring involved in those systems, replace and repair defective parts, and ensure the proper handling of all the components. HVAC technicians work in both homes and commercial buildings.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGER

The manager of a construction project is perhaps the most important person there. They ensure everything and everyone is working as it should and that things are being done safely, effectively, and on time. They see the project from start to finish and are often the ones who interact and communicate with the client the most. But they also communicate with the architect, contractors, and subcontractors to ensure everyone is on the same page and that they have everything they need. Communication and leadership skills are crucial in this role.

ROOFERS

Roofers replace, repair, and install the roofs on buildings, and when the weather is rough, they can be godsends to any construction project. Not only do they ensure the client has a safe and sturdy roof for their home and building, but their work also ensures everyone else’s work on site is protected from the elements. They also work with a variety of materials when installing new roofs or when repairing already existing structures.

DRYWALLERS

Drywallers do just what the name suggests: cut and install drywall, hang drywall, and prepare it for the painting process. But this isn’t a simple job. Drywallers need experience and expertise to lay drywall over insulation, electrical wires and outlets, and pipes. They must cut the material correctly to fit it in every corner while also smoothing out, patching, and trimming any areas to give the whole space a seamless finish.

GARAGE DOOR INSTALLERS

Garage door installers may seem self-explanatory, but beyond installing a garage door, they must also service it to ensure it continues to work properly and repair and replace it as necessary. Being familiar with the door mechanisms as well as the different types of doors available is important to ensure you can meet every client’s needs.

CONCRETE FINISHERS

Concrete finishers are responsible for smoothing and finishing the surface of poured concrete. This can include on floors, walkways, sidewalks, roads, curbs, or basements. But beyond smoothing concrete, this job also involves mixing concrete to the correct specification, using forms to create concrete blocks for different building projects, monitoring how the climate and weather can affect the concrete, and knowing what to do to ensure the best results. They must also be able to work well with others as they will collaborate with engineers, electricians, plumbers, and more.

OPERATING ENGINEERS

Operating engineers handle some of the biggest tools and equipment on a construction site. They can operate bulldozers, compressors, tractors, front-end loaders, and scrapers to move dirt, demolish structures, pour concrete, and perform a variety of other tasks that need a specific tool. Operating engineers often repair and maintain these tools as well.

TILE SETTERS

A tile setter has a range of responsibilities, including laying and setting tiles on floors and walls, cutting and fitting tiles around different obstacles, preparing, measuring, and cutting tiles to exact specifications, and repairing and replacing cracked or damaged tiles. Having the expertise to work with a variety of materials and being able to follow blueprints and create different patterns is vital to being a successful tile setter.

CARPET INSTALLERS

Carpet installers use specific tools to lay carpet on new floors or over existing flooring. The job requires precise measurements, attention to detail, and knowledge of different types of carpets and materials to ensure you’re providing the best final results. Whether installing carpet inside an office or in a home, this role is vital to guarantee a perfect living or working environment.

SHEET METAL WORKERS

Sheet metal workers fabricate, install, and repair products made with metal sheeting, like air conditioning and heating ducts, rain gutters, and siding. This position requires experience and knowledge about the material as well as how to work with and install it.

SCAFFOLDERS

Scaffolders erect and dismantle metal scaffolding on structures and building sites so that others can work at different heights and carry out their job safely and efficiently. Whether it be a house or a commercial building, scaffolding can be important for construction, renovation, and demolition. Because the safety of scaffolding is so important to the safety of the rest of the crew, having the knowledge and skill to put up the scaffold correctly is crucial.

CARPENTRY CONTRACTORS

A carpentry contractor on a construction site oversees all aspects of a construction that involves carpentry. Their main duties include hiring and training subcontractors, applying for the necessary licenses and building permits, and supervising the subcontractors. They keep the carpentry projects on an appropriate timeline, communicate with the general contractor and client, take care of materials and equipment needed, and ensure everything is going smoothly.

CARPENTRY SUBCONTRACTOR

Carpentry subcontractors are hired to complete specific tasks like closets, customized cabinets, furniture, etc. Traditionally, a carpentry subcontractor has certain expertise in a specific field, and they are hired for that job. Whatever your expertise, general contractors are always looking for quality subcontractors for particular jobs.
